★★★★★ The Lion and the Cobra (1987)
Honestly, before last week, we hadn’t thought about Sinead for a while; she was the skinhead ‘90s muso we associated with wince-inducing headlines. But after the news of her death broke, like many others, we went on a journey of rediscovery. If you’re not already a fan, her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, is the perfect place to start—lilting Irish trauma pop that has had us scream-singing “MANDINKAAAAA” with tears in our eyes while riding down Swanston Street. And the best track, “I Want Your Hands On Me,” is a sultry come-hither number that see-saws unpredictably between sexy and frightening.
