Letter from the Editors
Announcing a new weekly newsletter from Cameron Hurst, Sally Olds, and Oscar Schwartz
Dear reader,
Welcome to the end of the world. Or at least, The Paris End.
The Paris End is the top end of town in Melbourne, Australia. But it’s also a cosmopolitan purgatory—there are versions of it in cities everywhere.
Here, you will find a Gucci, a Prada, a Balenciaga, cocktail bars, bubble tea vendors, corporate lackeys sucking on vapes, food delivery drivers, art parties and book parties, revolutionaries, street preachers, and grifting DJs. And, crucially for our purposes, there are charming young bohemian writers trying to make sense of it all.
Your faithful correspondents will be out and about, on the Paris End and in the suburbs, in the regions and abroad, bringing you word of the latest goings-on around town. “Around town” is not so much a place as an approach to life and writing. We want to revive the art of reportage—to step away from the screen and get back out into the streets. Whether writing on the global elite or the neighborhood wine bar, we will be pounding the pavement in search of stories with longevity. With more juice than a Bloody Mary, you can rely on THE PARIS END for a good time.
WHO ARE WE?
CAMERON HURST is a writer, art historian, and local news anchor. Cam's first column is a report on the New Year's Day rave at the end of Australian art history. Who is the naughtiest boy in the Melbourne art scene?
SALLY OLDS is a writer interested in cosmopolitanism and its discontents, and author of the much (Instagram) storied People who Lunch. For her first column, she attends Jordan Peterson's recent sold-out Melbourne stadium show.
OSCAR SCHWARTZ is a journalist and former poet. In his first column, Oscar goes in search of the fading figure of the backpacker, following the unravelling dreads deep into the Byron Bay bush.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
Every Thursday, paying members will receive a DISPATCH or THE STARS.
DISPATCHES are columns on any and all matters of significance: profiles of the mid and famous, communiqués from parties and events, and reports on the state of the culture. These are illustrated by the cartoonist Aaron Billings.
THE STARS are a rated review section of unbridled opinion and lifestyle advice, bringing you the best and worst in trends, books, dining, and more.
Membership costs $5 per month or $50 for the year. Or make history and become a founding member for only $100.
Non-paying members will receive one DISPATCH every month, also on a Thursday.
All content will be released online and delivered via Substack.
We publish what we want to read. You’ll want to read it too. Trust us! Either way, we’ll be seeing you… on The Paris End.
xx
