★★★★★ The MONA Ladies Lounge (RIP)
Last week, news broke that the First Lady of MONA Kirsha “KK” Kaechele's “Ladies Lounge” installation, a women’s-only section of the gallery featuring Picassos, a Sidney Nolan, and a custom green velvet lounge that court documents say resembles a “tethered, rearing, restrained-by-golden-chains-and-then-ultimately-defeated phallus,” was legally cancelled. A successful discrimination case was brought against the Hobart-based gallery by Jason Lau, a male visitor who was barred entry from the birds-identified area in April 2023. NOOOO!!!!! Sally and Cam had just been planning on spending $500 there for the butler-serviced, blindfolded art girlboss vulva chocolate and caviar experience! (Oscar was not invited. “I swear, I didn't mind. I was excited for you girls,” he said. “Haha.”) Lau represented himself at the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and argued that he'd coughed up the $35 entry fee and should, for gender equality's sake, be allowed into the Lounge. As for KK… she led a performance of about twenty women in navy suits and red lipstick reading feminist texts and striking poses in the courtroom.
